Speeding Alameda deputy won't be charged in fatal crash

Updated 7:44 pm, Tuesday, April 29, 2014

An Alameda County sheriff's deputy was speeding when he struck and killed a pedestrian and injured another near Hayward last year but won't be criminally charged, authorities said.
Deputy Jonathan Hamm was traveling above the speed limit in a marked Dodge Charger near Mission Boulevard and Cherry Way in the unincorporated Cherryland neighborhood about 4:30 a.m. April 19, 2013, when he hit 38-year-old Valdemar Flores-Rosas of Hayward and Delia Delgadillo, according to a California Highway Patrol investigation.
Flores-Rosas died at the scene, and Delgadillo was injured.
Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said Monday that Hamm had been looking for a car involved in a crime in the predawn hours, when there is usually little pedestrian traffic.
Prosecutors have declined to file charges, and Hamm is still with the Sheriff's Office.
Flores-Rosas' family and Delgadillo are suing Alameda County in Superior Court.
